With a publication history stretching back nearly a century, Amazing Stories has set many landmarks—high and low. As the first science fiction magazine on the market, Amazing Stories served as a proving ground for many writers who would later become luminaries in the field. With quality varying wildly over the years—from original outstanding fiction to pure pulp to reprints—Amazing Stories struggled through surges of interest (with 120,000 monthly subscribers at one point) to multiple bankruptcies and back again.
The new publisher, Steve Davidson, has a strategy in play that could catapult Amazing Stories back into the forefront of the science fiction realm. By building a web community around an online version of the magazine, he hopes to build a level of interest to launch a print publication and maintain a permanent staff (and also pay writers just compensation for their contributions). Steve generously shared his ideas, discussed his strategy, and offered insights into publishing science fiction in the digital era in this interview (conducted in early January, 2015).
